What you’ll do
Getting there
Mendoza sits at the foothills of the Andes in western Argentina, a short flight, about 1 hour 45 minutes, from Buenos Aires, or just over an hour from Santiago, Chile, across the Andes via one of the most spectacular air routes in South America. For those with time, the drive from Santiago offers a full day of mountain scenery, crossing high-altitude passes with views of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas. Once in Mendoza, the Uco Valley wine country is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road, with vineyards and snowcapped mountains unfolding along the way.
Stay
Both Casa de Uco and The Vines Resort & Spa immerse you in the Uco Valley’s landscape of endless vineyards and towering Andean peaks.
Casa de Uco blends modern architecture with a deep connection to its surroundings. Expect floor-to-ceiling views, a working vineyard at your doorstep, guided tastings, horseback rides through the vines, and a farm-to-table restaurant highlighting local produce.
The Vines Resort & Spa offers private villas, a world-class spa, and access to Siete Fuegos, Francis Mallmann’s celebrated open-fire restaurant. Here, you can craft your own wine blend, cycle through sun-drenched vineyards, or simply watch the light change over the Andes from your terrace.
Worth knowing
Mendoza is Argentina’s wine heartland, producing over 70% of the country’s wine, with Malbec as its undisputed star. The high-altitude terroir of the Uco Valley, around 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level, gives wines their signature intensity, deep color, and elegant structure, thanks to warm sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Beyond Malbec, you’ll find exceptional Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Torrontés, Chardonnay, and bold blends that reflect the valley’s diverse microclimates.
March’s grape harvest is a highlight, when the city and surrounding vineyards come alive with the Vendimia festival. Visiting here is as much about tasting as it is about understanding: guided barrel samplings, blending sessions, and vineyard walks reveal the region’s deep agricultural traditions, from ancient irrigation canals to modern biodynamic practices. Evenings are often spent outdoors, savoring food and wine pairings against the backdrop of the Andes, where the glow of the setting sun feels almost as full-bodied as the glass in your hand.
